Fun Places Orlando: Lake Eola Park

The star of Orlando’s Downtown Arts District, Lake Eola is one of America’s oldest municipal parks and is easily one of Central Florida’s most beautiful. The Eola in its name comes from a Seminole term that translates to prairie chicken and while no prairie chickens currently live in downtown Orlando, plenty of other animals do birds like blue herons, osprey, and great egrets; squirrels; turtles; various kinds of fish. There are also numerous species of ducks, including mallards, which frequent Lake Eola Park after they’ve wintered up north.

In addition to all those creatures, Lake Eola is home to many plants. It was named an All-America City in 1993 for its landscaping efforts. It features more than 150 trees and flowers native to Florida, azaleas, and rhododendrons imported from places like China and Japan.
